Thanks for reading, Joshua. I guess I should have stated that differently... I really say I'm calling on behalf of my clients regardless of whether I'm leaving a voicemail or speaking to someone in person. In my mind, it's most important for the media to think of me in relation to my client as opposed to my agency. Sometimes that company recognition, if it is a well-known company, can help get you a few seconds of a busy editor's time when you begin doing calls and introducing yourself. The ultimate goal is to get an editor thinking about your client and how that client can contribute as a resource to articles they are planning or writing, so the more you can align yourself with the client, the better.

Great article. I'm currently an intern at a PR agency and going through the same anxiety of follow up calls.

I feel the same way about not wanting to disturb a busy reporter while knowing that a call from some PR flack is the last thing they want under deadline.

Just one question: you say that if you get a voicemail you like to say you're calling 'on behalf' of your client. What do you say when you get someone in person? I typically say I'm calling from the agency, but I think it may be better to say I'm calling on behalf of my clients.

Thanks for the nod, Heather. And great to run into you again! It's wonderful to see how far you've come in such a short time.

Keep blogging about this stuff. Bill needs more presenters ;)

Two things, Heather -- one a caution, one an encouragement.

First the caution: While social media are a growing part of the communication mix -- and we must pay close attention -- we also must be careful not to lose ourselves and our perspective in Web 2.0. Many of our clients still need sell sheets, news releases and mainstream media exposure to be successful. Some don't blog and probably never will blog. Social media should be part of the strategy when appropriate, and as a Web 2.0 native, you are well positioned to lead the charge and explain the benefits -- or lack of them.

Now the encouragement. You'd be surprised how much a newbie can bring to the table when he or she has social media awareness and savvy. I recall just a few semesters ago when Aussie Paull Young (still on your blogroll, I see) was fresh out of college and making his worldwide social media tour. Today, Paull's contributions to the clients of Converseon are hardly at the junior level.

Fact is, a lot of folks over the age of 30 don't get social media because they haven't done them. So they're are turning to the "kids" like you who have this knowledge. Don't be shy in giving them your thoughts (but I know you won't be!) A

I, too, have trouble keeping up with the feeder. I set aside an hour midweek and an hour on the weekends. Most of the content I just scan, paying special attention to the posts others are talking about. And read the books and the blogs of the leaders in Web 2.0.

This is me being super jealous, kiddo. One of these days my bank account is going to recover from living abroad so I can finally travel abroad. Keep it real, Bing (whatever that means).

I'm betting the fall class, under Professor Ewing's capable leadership, will sleep well tonight thanks to a long celebration at Ray's that follows the presentations. If they don't have time today, I'll make certain they all get this link and have a chance to reflect on your thoughts.

The students who survive the PRKent program generally are ready to enter the profession and make real contributions. Those who excel, as you did, are ready to move ahead very quickly.

Thanks for thinking of your former classmates and your alma mater.
